Support

Your gift buys microphone time for someone who has never had any

Sound System Culture, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We carry no advertising, we charge nothing to listen, and we pay the artists and interns we work with. That is only possible because of donors, grants and volunteers.

Where it goes

What your support funds

We keep overhead low and put money into people and equipment. Here is roughly what different levels of support make possible.

$50

One episode’s hosting and distribution

Covers the platform and bandwidth costs of publishing a weekly episode and delivering it to affiliate stations.

$250

A day of mentored studio time

Puts an intern in the studio with a working engineer for a full session — recording, editing and mixing real broadcast material.

$1,000

A recording and equipment package

Microphones, interfaces, recorders and storage that stay with the program and serve cohort after cohort.

$2,500

One paid summer internship stipend

Underwrites a graduating senior’s full paid apprenticeship — the single most direct way to support our education work.

$5,000

A new commission, recorded properly

Composition and player fees, rehearsal, multitrack recording, mixing and archival deposit for a new piece of work.

Any amount

General operating support

The most useful money we receive. Unrestricted gifts let us keep the lights on and respond to opportunity quickly.

Volunteer

Give time instead

We are a small organization and volunteers do real work here. We are regularly looking for help with:

  • Audio editing, mixing and mastering
  • Transcription, show notes and archival cataloguing
  • Interviewing, research and fact-checking
  • Photography, video and graphic design
  • Grant research and writing
  • Mentoring interns in any of the above
  • Event and venue support in New York

Tell us what you do and roughly how much time you have. We will be honest about whether we can use it well.
